Poultry Science at the University of Maryland

Graduate students in Poultry Science at the UMD Animal Science Department have the unique opportunity to learn from, teach with, and work alongside some of academia’s brightest minds. Our students choose from a variety of animal science, statistics, and biomolecular courses to serve as the foundation of their advanced education. Those with teaching assistantships play a leading role in instructing and assessing undergraduate-level animal science courses each semester. In their time here, all students work closely with their advisor on projects within their research specialty.

Poultry Science

Position description

One graduate teaching assistantship at the MSc level is available in the Che Lab, Department of Animal and Avian Sciences, University of Maryland, beginning Spring 2026. The selected graduate student will be advised by Dr. Sunoh Che, Assistant Professor of Poultry Science Management. The graduate student will receive a stipend, fringe benefits, and full tuition coverage for the duration of their research program (2.5 years for MSc-level).

Research topics include improving backyard and small-flock poultry health and biosecurity.
The selected graduate student will lead all aspects of their research project(s), including:

• Developing survey questionnaires using Qualtrics Poultry Science
• Analyzing data from the survey
• Developing fact sheets and infographics
• Preparing manuscripts for publication

This position includes a UMD Animal Science teaching assistantship, which requires a 20-hour/week commitment during the Fall and/or Spring semesters.

Requirements and Qualifications

Minimum Requirements
• Undergraduate GPA: 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale
• English Proficiency (for teaching assistant roles) for international applicants:

  • IELTS: Overall score of 7 (Listening 7, Reading 7, Writing 7, Speaking 7.5)

  • iBT TOEFL: Total score of 95 (Listening 24, Reading 26, Writing 24, Speaking 24)

Qualifications and Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree in animal science, veterinary medicine, or a related field
• Strong academic performance in undergraduate program
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Data organization and project management skills
• Ability to synthesize and critique scientific literature
• Experience handling livestock, including broiler chickens
• Proficiency in R or Python programming languages (preferred)
• Publications in peer-reviewed journals and/or abstracts submitted to and presented at conferences (preferred)
