The Biomass and Green Technologies Laboratory at the University of Liège, Belgium, is expanding its cutting-edge research and seeking a highly motivated PhD researcher (M/F/X) to join its team. Based at the beautiful Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech Campus, this position provides an exceptional opportunity to be part of a high-impact European research project focused on biomaterial chemistry—with a particular emphasis on lignin-based materials.

🧪 Research Focus & Responsibilities

As part of an innovative, interdisciplinary team led by Prof. Aurore Richel, the successful candidate will contribute to the development of novel lignin-based solutions for advanced material and energy storage applications. Your work will be directly tied to sustainability goals and technological innovation across Europe.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Isolation of lignin using advanced chemical engineering methods.

  • Characterization of molecular and supramolecular lignin structures using established analytical techniques.

  • Investigation into the relationship between lignin’s physical properties and its electrical performance.

The ultimate goal of your research is to support the design and development of next-generation energy storage components and sustainable advanced materials.

Qualifications

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in one of the following or closely related fields:

  • Chemical Sciences (e.g., polymer chemistry, materials chemistry, catalysis, electrochemistry)

  • Chemical Engineering

  • Biotechnology

  • Bioengineering

Additional Requirements:

  • Proven research experience in relevant scientific disciplines.

  • Excellent spoken and written English is essential for international collaboration.

  • A working knowledge of French is highly desirable.

  • Demonstrated teamwork, communication skills, and the ability to thrive in a multidisciplinary, multicultural environment.
